Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds extracted from the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.
Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin.
Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their aromatic and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends toward more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications.
The use of essential oils in today’s world is commonly referred to as Aromatherapy — a new name for a centuries-old practice that blends the science of scent and the essence of pure plant life to promote health, healing, beauty and vitality. While the term "alternative medicine" is a buzz word often use to describe natural remedies of any kind, plant medicine is indeed "original medicine"!
Contrary to popular belief, essential oils do not contain vitamins or minerals. The health benefits they provide stem from the interactions of their naturally occurring chemical constituents with the human body in many different ways.
Another misbelief is that essential oils are the "lifeblood" of the plant. Oils most definitely contribute to the plant's well being, but they do not have the ability to keep the plant alive.
"More is better" - when it comes to using the oils, more is certainly not better! Essential Oils are very concentrated and only a small amount is needed to receive health benefits.
The power of essential oils can affect the body quickly and in a very powerful manner. There are many actions that essential oils can create within the body. Each individual essential oil possesses its own unique variety of therapeutic abilities.
These may include, among a multitude of others, properties such as supporting a healthy inflammatory response, relieving occasional muscle and joint discomfort, cleansing and purifying action, digestive support, cellular detoxification, healthy respiratory functions and so much more ...
The beautiful thing about the use of essential oils is that they can be used safely without any secondary stresses to the body as often occurs from pain relievers, or other over-the-counter medications.
Science is now beginning to confirm what the ancients knew so well — essential oils, the pure “essence” of a plant, provide both psychological and physical benefits when used properly and with wisdom.
Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant they were derived from. It is important to be crystal clear here in distinguishing that perfume oils, also known as fragrance oils or “fragrances”, are not the same as essential oils. Perfume oils and fragrances contain unnatural chemicals and do not provide the therapeutic benefits of pure essential oils. As a matter of fact, many fragrances or perfume extenders can actually be toxic to the body, particularly to chemically sensitive people!
A properly produced and sourced essential oil should be both pure and potent.
Purity means that the oil has no contaminations or fillers.
Potency means that the oil has an ideal chemical profile for that particular plant in order to produce the intended therapeutic benefit. Plant chemistry develops differently, based on where the plant is grown, which includes climate, soil conditions, altitude and growing practices.
Remember, essential oils are not magic potions (even though it sometimes seems as if they really are). Be patient. Essential oils work to help to bring the body into balance – thus helping the body’s natural defenses to restore homeostasis. It is through steady, consistent use that the oils have the best effect. Follow the suggested protocols, but don’t be afraid to try and experiment with different options. Our bodies react differently and it takes using and getting familiar with the oils and resources to be able to find the best solution. Each oil has many different uses and each problem has many different solutions.
